Magic Pass

Overview

Crozet Lelex is one of the most beautiful spots in the region. It features flat areas, slopes, valleys, and sections that can prove quite steep. A true pleasure for snowkite touring. It's a bit like our little Norway.

Access is via the Crozet-Lelex ski resort. Access to the spot via the Col de la Faucille is now forbidden unless you launch your kite only from the summit of Colomby de Gex (quite a long hike though...).

When leaving from Lelex, finding where the spot ends is quite simple — it's the summit of Colomby de Gex (there's a metal structure at the top).

New in 2019! The riding area is restricted by a prefectural decree. Details here: https://www.rnn-hautechainedujura.fr/composants/uploads/2018/08/AP-vol-librecarto-2018-signe.compressed.pdf

Spot type

Resort (Ski lift access)

Altitude: 1500m

Parking

Access to the spot by ski lifts: From Crozet (the "Swiss" side), take the gondola with a hiker pass. Once at the top of the first gondola, take the chairlift below (100m below the gondola). Once at the summit, the spot will be visible if you look North. Simply glide down to the small lake. Then, if there's wind, you can kite to the spot entrance (always to the North), and if the wind is light, a short 10-minute walk will be needed to reach the spot entrance. Return by skiing is possible if there's snow all the way down to the valley. Otherwise, don't miss the last gondola!

Hazards

This is a large mountain spot. As soon as you move away from the Lelex ski resort, it is recommended to carry climbing skins and poles (splitboard or snowshoes for snowboarders). It's not uncommon for the wind to drop, and if you're 5km from the start, it can be a very long walk back through the snow with your gear on your back. A GPS can also be a good idea, as visibility loss can quickly make navigation difficult.

Generally speaking, ridgelines should be avoided — firstly because birds nest there in winter, and secondly because in some places, there are cliffs just below. At the bottom of the spot, avoid riding at the forest edge, as wildlife also spends a quiet winter there. If you encounter chamois or other animals, leave them alone so they don't exhaust themselves fleeing from you. The map above is up to date with the latest prefectural decree.

We are in a natural area where snowkiting is barely tolerated — it would be a shame to lose access to this legendary spot. More info here: https://www.rnn-hautechainedujura.fr/
