Spot functioning

Two possible zones: north of the port jetty (more exposed, powerful) and south of the jetty (slightly more sheltered). The port jetty provides a navigation reference. Respect strictly the zones reserved for surfers and swimmers. The port entrance is strictly off-limits. In summer, lifeguards manage beach zones — always check the designated areas before launching.

On the water

Powerful Atlantic beach break intensified by the Gouf de Capbreton — waves 0.5 to 2.5m+ with sudden increases in swell size. Sandy bottom with strong rip currents. The submarine canyon channels the swell energy directly towards the beach, creating some of the most powerful shore waves in Southwest France.

Open all year round

Open year-round. Best conditions: September to May for powerful swell. Summer brings thermal north winds (lighter, 12-18 knots) more suited to progressing riders. In summer, kite zones are restricted in peak bathing hours.

Parking

Parking at the Capbreton beach car parks, accessible from the D652. Full services in Capbreton town (restaurants, surf shops, accommodation). Ferry/bridge access over the Boudigau channel.

Hazards

Powerful Atlantic waves and shorebreak. The Gouf de Capbreton (submarine canyon) creates unique and powerful swell conditions — waves can be larger and more unpredictable than at other nearby beaches. Strong rip currents. Shared beach — respect all surfing and bathing zones. Tide-affected: check tables before each session. Never ride alone.

Wind specificities

Same dominant wind pattern as Hossegor — west and northwest onshore winds from Atlantic depressions, plus a reliable thermal north wind in summer afternoons. The submarine canyon has no effect on wind but can cause sudden sea state changes when swell size increases rapidly. Wind from the south is gusty and unreliable.
