Spot de Mancora

Mancora

Mancora

Overview

Mancora is one of Peru's best kite spots, based on the notorious Peruvian North Shore — it is still a hidden gem and a must-do on every kiteboarder's list. With its consistent wind conditions during the wind season, windy days are guaranteed from mid-April to December. The wind usually comes from the southwest, starts around 12:00, and dies around 17:00. It is also a great spot for foiling, so you can kitesurf every day, even on light wind days. If you are a strapless and wave enthusiast, Mancora and the north shore of Peru is your place to be. During most of the wind season (Austral Winter), Mancora receives South and South-West ground swells travelling a long way from the Patagonia seas in the South Pacific, resulting in great conditions for wave kitesurfing. If you prefer freestyle, no problem! Some days will be flat, some a little more choppy, and you'll have some nice kickers! If you are looking to start your kiteboarding adventure, Mancora is a great spot to do so. As mentioned, there will be some waves, but schools such as WildKite Peru have well-trained instructors with a lot of expertise who know where and when to go. Learning in these conditions might be a little harder than on a flat lake, but if you make it here, you'll make it anywhere.

Wind specificities

The wind season here in the north of Peru (Mancora, Lobitos), but also Pacasmayo, runs from mid-April to mid-January. The entire wind season in the far north (Mancora – Lobitos) (April – December) is excellent with amazing wind statistics (towards the end of December and beginning of January, wind starts to fail on some days with the arrival of summer and the north Equatorial warm current). If you come on day trips with WildKite Peru to the spots around Mancora on the Peruvian North Shore, you will have a 98.5% chance of riding every day (within the wind season: April – December). The wind comes from the southwest, starts around 12:00, and dies around 17:00. In the little town of Mancora, where WildKite Peru is based, the wind statistics drop to about 4 to 5 days a week. But it is a great spot for foiling, so in the end you can kitesurf every day! The wind direction (side-onshore) is ideal for beginners as it is very consistent and known to be the safest. The sand beaches are endless and there are no crowds like you usually see at most kiteboarding spots around the world. The only drawback is that statistically, we may lose 2 or 3 days every month due to waves. When a big swell hits the north shore of Peru, there is no sheltered beach where we can hide from the waves.

Hazards

Mancora is a pretty safe spot — there are no dangerous currents. From time to time you have to watch out for fishing nets in the open water close to shore, but this is very rare. At the pointbreak where surfers ride, you need to take care of the rocks, but you will not kite there unless you are an advanced kitesurfer.
