Le Portel is the home spot of the APG kitesurf school, located south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, facing a spectacular setting with the harbour entrance, the Fort de l'Heurt island fortress and the Digue Carnot breakwater. The beach is accessible from the parking directly facing the spot.
Works from N and NE (flat, gentle waves) to S via W. NE gives calm, flat conditions, ideal for beginners. SW force 6+ creates very disturbed conditions due to harbour structures — for confirmed riders. Two key hazards: Fort de l'Heurt (60m exclusion zone when nearby) and the Digue Carnot (100m clearance in SW/W). APG school operates from Le Portel as its main base, with 230+ wind days per year on the Côte d'Opale.

Intermediate
Open all year round
Fort de l'Heurt (island fortress visible from the beach): stay within a 60m radius if passing near it. Digue Carnot (breakwater): with SW and W wind, maintain at least 100m distance. SW and W in force 6+: very disturbed seas due to the harbour structures — strong riders only. S wind: slightly offshore at times. Check the APG school for current zone rules and hazard positions.
N and NE: flat, gentle conditions — ideal for beginners, recommended by APG. SW and W: possible but disturbed sea with force 6+ (harbour structures create confused swell). NW: good general conditions. S: slightly offshore in places — not ideal. SE: offshore — do not practice. In strong NE conditions, the Wissant "venturi" effect between the two Caps is a better option for advanced riders.
