Spot de Bray-Dunes - Last French Spot (Belgian Border)

Bray-Dunes - Last French Spot (Belgian Border)

Bray-Dunes - Last French Spot (Belgian Border)

Overview

Bray-Dunes is the last French kitesurf spot before the Belgian border (De Panne is a 10 min drive away), offering a vast beach with direct access from the seafront parking. The beach extends both north (toward Belgium) and south (toward Dunkerque), with no obstacles except in the summer bathing zone.

Works from NE (nice waves — the best direction here) to W via N. Beautiful waves with NE. WSW is possible but offshore risk — confirmed riders only, never alone. The "Le Vent de Bray-Dunes" association fosters a convivial, family-friendly atmosphere. A particularly popular spot for crossings with De Panne (Belgium). Accessible by bike from Dunkerque via the coastal cycling path.

Spot functioning

Access: parking directly along the seafront dike (Bray-Dunes, Nord 59). 10m walk to the beach. Summer: respect the central bathing zone — kite to the north or south. On compacted sand (dry low tide): landboards, kite buggies, mountainboards are present — avoid these shared areas for kite launching. Belgian border: 5 km north — De Panne (Belgium) is a popular destination for cross-border kite downwinds.

Hazards

OSO wind (WSW): risk of offshore drift if a problem occurs — never go out alone. Lampposts along the promenade at high tide with large coefficients — beware when launching/landing near them. Three blockhouses along the beach toward Belgium (near the dunes). Two shipwrecks on the south beach — know their positions. In summer: avoid compacted sand areas at low tide (landboards, kite buggies). Fishing nets at low tide near the waterline. Cycle paths and joggers on the dike year-round.

Wind specificities

NE: the best direction — beautiful waves, popular cross-border sessions with De Panne. N and NW: also excellent. W and WSW: possible but beware offshore drift — experienced riders only, never alone. OSO/WSW in strong conditions: risk is real, the Association Vent de Bray-Dunes advises not to go out solo. In buildings wind shadow zone (OSO/NNO): irregular wind near promenade buildings — move away from the dike to find clean wind.
