Spot de Le Parc des Dosses

Le Parc des Dosses

Le Parc des Dosses

Overview

Le Parc des Dosses — Le Barcarès — Étang de Salses-Leucate. WORLD-CLASS FREESTYLE & BIG AIR SPOT. Home of the Lords of Tram competition — international Big Air event where athletes jump 20+ metres (70+ km/h wind required). Spot of choice of Edgar Ulrich (World Champion 2022), Angely Bouillot, Arthur Guillebert.

Located on the northern edge of the bassin des Dins d'Illes. Natura 2000 protected site, remarkable biodiversity (rosehips, dunes, salt meadows). Interpretation trail with interactive panels.

By Tramontane NW: ULTRA-FLAT water — protected by a long sandbar, the water surface becomes an absolute billiard table. Ideal for massive crantages and gigantic jumps. By S/SE: choppier, move to Éole (east of bassin) for flat water.

For experienced riders only — offshore wind often 30+ knots, gusty, cable trap of téléski nearby. Restaurant Le Manuia with panoramic terrace and Canigou views.

Spot opening date

Open all year round

Sailing year-round. Kite zone delimited. Forbidden to launch from grand étang side. Best: winter Tramontane (October-April) for ultra-flat freestyle. Summer thermals also work but choppier. Lords of Tram competition: April (dates depend on wind conditions, yellow/green light system).

Spot currently open :-)

Parking

Small parking near the former kite school / téléski nautique. Access via Avenue des Dosses, then right along a path. Some bushes for wind shelter. Not very large — arrive early. Restaurant Le Manuia on site with panoramic terrace.

Hazards

Téléski nautique cables: downwind from Tramontane — keep safe distance, cables are a deadly trap for kites. Offshore Tramontane (NW): pushes rapidly to opposite shore. Very strong and gusty, often 30+ knots in winter. Do not navigate without upwind mastery and self-rescue skills. Stakes and fishing nets on the right side of the spot. Gusty conditions: sudden shifts, reinforcements, or complete calm in minutes. No launch from grand étang side — forbidden. Crowded: arrive early, very popular.

Wind specificities

Tramontane (NW/NNW/N): THE wind of Parc des Dosses. Often 30+ knots in winter. Ultra-flat water by NW. Onshore on the étang (pushes towards water = safe launch, but offshore in terms of reaching opposite shore). Can be very gusty — sudden shifts, reinforcements or total calm in minutes.

Thermal S/SE: works but choppier. By S/SE: better at Éole (east of bassin) for flat.

Big Air Mecca: Lords of Tram competition (April) — 36 athletes, 20+ metre jumps. Edgar Ulrich (Almanarre origin) trains here preferentially. Mikaili Sol, Arthur Guillebert, Nicolas Gambier all regulars.
